STEWARDS OF THE TRAIL & HEARTH
A true sanctuary is defined not merely by its oak beams, but by the figures standing in the lantern-light when you arrive. No wayfarer walks our switchbacks unguided, and no guest sits cold by our stone.
KIT STERLING
When dusk settles over the Douglas firs at the edge of the Grange, it is Kit who steps out from the mossy boughs holding a forged iron storm-lantern. Dressed in a weathered green leather jerkin and an oxblood wool half-cloak pinned with a brass fox, he carries the easy, dangerous grace of a man who spent his youth smuggling secrets across contested borders.
Quick-witted, observant, and disarmingly attentive, Kit inspects every party’s wax-sealed Writ of Passage before leading them down the winding forest trail—making the walk into the hollow feel like an illicit midnight escapade.
“Leave your iron carriages at the gate, love… give me your word you bring no courtly quarrels into my trees, and I’ll lend you the light to find the hearth.”
Kit rolls two carved bone dice across his buckskin knuckles at the trailhead. Beat his house roll of 8 to claim a brass token for the Still-Room:
GARETH BLACKWOOD
If Kit is the thrill of the shadowed forest road, Gareth is the deep, intoxicating warmth of the fire waiting at the end of it. Broad-shouldered and battle-scarred, Gareth spent fifteen years enforcing the dark decrees of ambitious kings before breaking his sword-oath to build a woodland hall where no crown holds sway.
With the heavy iron Warden’s Key resting against his oxblood leather jerkin and his sleeves rolled over powerful forearms, Gareth tends the roaring stone hearth, pours the Still-Room flagons, and guards the peace of every table beneath his boughs.
“Step out of the mist and bar the oak door behind you. Inside these timbers, the only battles fought are the ones upon your maps. Tell me what the road took out of you tonight, and I’ll see it restored.”
Step up to the heavy oak bar and let Gareth recommend a pairing from the Larder & Still-Room for your evening’s campaign:
THE PACT IN THE MOUNTAIN RAIN
Three winters ago, when Gareth walked away from the Regent’s service with a price upon his head, a silver-tongued scout named Kit Sterling slipped into his mountain camp at midnight with orders to steal his land charter. Instead of drawing steel, Gareth didn’t even look up from the fire—he simply poured a second cup of hot spiced cider, held it out into the dark, and said, “If you’re going to take my head, little fox, warm your hands first. Your fingers are shaking from the rain.” Kit burned his warrant in the embers that night. Together, the rogue and the commander raised the timbers of The Warden’s Rest around the living cedars.
